With You - Sam Cooke (Keen) -- A Kookie Little Paradise - Jo Ann Campbell (ABC-Paramount) That's the Way the Cookie Crumbles - Billy & Lillie (Swan) ------------------------------------------------------------------ NOTE: The above is the exact listing that WABC used this week. There are many questions regarding this list. For one thing, what happened to last week's #1, "Alley Oop" by Dante & the Evergreens, on the Madison label? This week's #2, noted as down from #1, is, indeed, "Alley Oop," but it's listed as by the Hollywood Argyles, on Lute records. Some radio stations would on occasion list all versions of a song at one position, a la "Your Hit Parade." But there would usually be a reference to all artists involved. In this case, it seems like WABC just replaced Dante & the Evergreens with the Hollywood Argyles, giving the latter artist credit for the entire chart run of "Alley Oop" up to this point. Next, the two-sided Jackie Wilson hit, both sides of which shared the #52 position last week, are now separated, one side moving up to #28, the other to #20a. 20a! #20 is by Billy Vaughn. How was this determined? And why did WABC separate the Jackie Wilson sides? Now, take a look at #42, then look at #55. Why was Elvis Presley's "It's Now Or Never," on RCA Victor, given TWO distinct, and widely separated, positions? Did Elvis have a Spanish or Italian version of the song? This is doubtful, or it surely would have shown up on collectors' albums by now. My guess is, that the flip, "A Mess of Blues," was the intended #55 position. However, this doesn't explain how "You Mean Everything to Me" by Neil Sedaka shows up at #'s 71 and 77, as the flip already shows at #76. I think that WABC had relied on the "Cash Box" charts for so long, their own methodology for compiling a survey was still suffering growing pains. While things do improve as the weeks, months, years go on, WABC will always be known for anomalies in their surveys. --KFW
